IRS warns about new e-mail scam

Washington, D.C. (Nov. 5, 2007)
By WebCPA staff

The Internal Revenue Service warned about a new e-mail scam that purports to come from the IRS asking for charitable contributions for the victims of the recent Southern California wildfires.

The e-mails include text from a speech about the wildfires by a member of the California Assembly to help them look more legitimate. They also include a link to a site that appears to be operated by the IRS, but actually is bogus. The site solicits charitable contributions for wildfire victims and contains a link to a donation form asking for personal and financial information.

The IRS believes the e-mail is part of a phishing scheme that attempts to put fraudulent charges on a victim's credit card. The site may also contain malicious software that could try to steal passwords and other confidential information from a victim's computer.

Recipients of the e-mails who click on any links should have their computers checked for malicious software, the IRS warned. They should also monitor their financial accounts for signs of suspicious activity. If any is detected, the IRS recommends that they report it to law enforcement authorities and credit card companies. Recipients of the e-mails should also forward them to phishing@irs.gov.

Recovery Assistance from Intuit

For the past few weeks, America has watched as wildfires ravaged Southern California from Malibu to the Mexican border. We've felt especially close to this tragedy, as hundreds of our employees were evacuated from their homes and several of our offices were closed due to fire and smoke. To everyone affected by these fires, Intuit employees offer our thoughts and support as you begin to rebuild your lives, homes and businesses. Pictures and news accounts vividly capture the images of this disaster, but from afar, we know we cannot begin to comprehend the enormity of the challenges you face. We want to do our part to help you address some of your needs. Therefore, we've established a Southern California Wildfire Recovery Assistance program, providing software, services and financial assistance to those in the devastated areas. As part of this program, the Intuit Foundation is providing a two-for-one match for every dollar contributed by employees to wildfire relief efforts. In addition, some of our employees are cashing out their vacation time to provide funds to selected charitable organizations.

Others have volunteered to help disaster assistance organizations. We're also providing software, services and additional financial support to help individuals and businesses recover and get re-established. Below is a partial list of the assistance we would like to offer. For complete details, please visit:

As our hearts go out to all of you in Southern California, we at Intuit will continue our support, in our own small way, to help you rebuild.

Calling Service

Congressman Bilbray’s office has received an offer of relief aid from TeleContinuity, Inc. to provide free calling service to victims of the Southern California wild fires.  TeleContinuity provides "survivable" backup telecommunication services to government agencies and business customers.  Their service helps to restore incoming telephone service to users during service outages or disruptions.  This offer is effective for the next two weeks, and thereafter, the offer will be re-evaluated on the basis of need, efficacy and other factors.

TeleContinuity’s service will allow users to keep in touch with family, friends and associates during the crisis.  Any person, government entity or business can self-register via the web by providing a list of phone numbers they wish to cover under a toll free access number.  As the user changes locations and telephone numbers, other parties calling them would not need to know their new number.  Callers trying to reach affected fire victims would simply need to call the toll free number at which point they will be prompted to re-enter the user’s normal 10 digit phone number and the call will be routed to the registered user’s location.

There are no restrictions on usage, except that the user must enter a zip code within areas impacted by the fires.  Additionally, users will be able to register as many numbers as they need, and they can also continually update or change the number(s) where they can be reached by submitting a new form.

Please disseminate this offer to your membership and any others who are affected by the wild fires.  We all offer TeleContinuity our sincere thanks and appreciation for their generous offer during this crisis.

Network For Health Holistic Center

It has been a difficult week for all of us. I am a resident of the Rancho Bernardo area, a licensed Holistic Health Practitioner, and a local business owner. Luckily, my office is still intact and open.

Of the many services I offer, I can think of several that might be of comfort to many of us at this very stressful time.

  • A bodywork session would certainly be in order now. The presence of touch from another person is, as they say, priceless. In addition to massage, one of the bodywork treatments we offer is called Healing Touch. Many of the hospitals use it now to soothe and heal.
  • Nutritionally I can offer some guidance to support the immune system and start to reverse the overall shock that our nervous systems have experienced. We need to increase our intake of antioxidants to combat the carcinogens in the air we are breathing.
  • I offer Fearless Living study groups and, especially at a time like this, we all can use some help with our fears.

I am available to any and all who may need a place to come and just talk.
You will receive a warm welcome and a complimentary 30 minute consultation to determine what might best support your needs at this time.

I am here to encourage, to help, to heal. Please feel free to call on me at this extraordinary time.
